TOMorrow 26: Digital Design for Product and Interiors

As part of the Coal Office and Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio we have a full visualisation and CGI function. It allows us to explore different materials and design concepts in the digital world. It adds another layer of possibilities to our work.

We typically follow a similar workflow as a full CGI or VFX studio. We start with a conversation with the designers, directors and marketing team to understand the brief; what we’re doing and it's purpose. Then, we navigate the creative process of story-boarding, research and development, production, post-production, all the way to the final edit.

Designing and modelling digitally gives us a chance to test aesthetics and materials within architectural spaces before we commit to physical production.

What’s interesting about the process is that we work side-by-side with the designer who created a specific product or space, so we can further understand what is the thinking and inspiration behind a project. That really adds a lot of value and meaning to the story.

There's something really special by the fact that you can explore 3D modelling, lighting and materiality all here. Sometimes we uncover unintentional ideas and concepts and end up creating some really beautiful unexpected results.
